“Hidden Danger” segment tells tragic story, demonstrates addition of rear-view cameras on any vehicle
NORTH ANDOVER, MASS. – November 21, 2014 (SDG MEDIAWIRE) – The Mobile Electronics Group (MEG), which provides infrastructure, business resources and enterprise solutions to retail and manufacturing entities in the automotive aftermarket, joined one of its premier retail members to work with a prominent partner to participate in an on-air segment advocating the safety benefits of installing a rear-view camera. The segment aired on WXIA Channel 11 in Atlanta during its evening newscast on November 17, and is available to view on the station’s website as well as the group’s consumer site, www.incarexperts.com.
KidsandCars.org, a website and organization that champions vehicle safety in the prevention of child-related accidents, worked with the station and Cartunes of Atlanta, a 36-year-old mobile electronics sales and installation facility in Georgia’s capital, to create the segment, called “Hidden Danger: Preventing Vehicle Backover Accidents.” Janette Fennell, KidsandCars.org’s president and founder, provided information and statistics on backover-related deaths to the station in preparation for the segment, while Cartunes of Atlanta performed a rear-view camera installation on the 7-year-old vehicle belonging to news reporter Julie Martin, who produced the story.
The segment recounts the tragic death of 4-year-old Jackson Peck, who was unseen behind his grandmother’s vehicle, and who was killed when she accidentally backed over the child. The reporter went on to demonstrate how an entire group of children could stand directly behind a vehicle and not be seen through the side-view or rear-view mirrors.
“When I put the car in reverse, it’s a whole different picture on my camera,” Martin said.
In the segment, Cartunes Atlanta Manager Emran Alborno outlines the basics of the installation and how the camera can be connected to an existing factory-installed screen. This connection can require a separate third-party adapter to make the camera compatible with the factory radio. Nav-TV (www.navtv.com), a safety and convenience product supplier based in Coral Springs, Fla., provided the camera and integration module for the specific installation.
Other options include connection to an aftermarket radio screen, or to an added on-dash monitor. Several companies also produce a replacement rear-view mirror with an embedded monitor that turns on when the vehicle is put into reverse gear and disappears behind the mirror’s surface when not in use.
